Wow - so evidently one of my co-workers retired yesterday. And the announcement was made today that yesterday was her last day. No goodbye, no party, no nothing. She worked for the government, in this specific office, for the last 30 years. She should have at least said goodbye, right? What a bummer...

That's so crazy! I bet that was shitty for her too. I wonder if they made her do it that way?
My dad worked for the DEpartment of the Army at the Frankford Arsenal for 35 years. When they closed it down in 1981 they gave my dad the choice, move with the department (he was the head of the dept, GS-15) to Pickatinni Aresenal or retire. My dad loved that job so much but he couldn't move out of the area, so he chose retirement. The threw a party for him and he didn't go, because I think it would have been too painful for him. Maybe your coworker decided to go quietly for this same reason?
that IS depressing! A girl left my old work that way too...but then again, no one liked her and she didn't like anyone...but if I were the lady at your work I'd be inclined to say, "I walked through those doors every day for thirty years--where's my party, bitches?!"
So classy, I know. ;)
